Does anyone on this list use the LogMsg_File feature in the SYSTEM CONFIG
file and if so what are you doing with it?
I know what it's for. I'm just wondering what people are doing with it.
Thanks,
Steve

We use the LOGMSG, sparingly, as a tool to alert users to upcoming events that will affect them. One such recent event was a change in the policy regarding idle users. We keep the LOGMSG for a short duration, then delete the file.

We want the users to recognize that something different is happening, so we do not display a LOGMSG at every logon. That way, it is an unusual event that might jolt them into a state of awareness.

Richard Schuh

I don't use LogMsg_File, but I have been using CP SET LOGMSG for over 20 years.
:)

We warn users about planned outages, that's pretty much it. We deliberately set
the size of even small messages to 34+ lines so that when it displays on a 327x
mod 2 or 3 it will result in MORE or HOLDING to give the user the opportunity to
read it (in case their PROFILE EXEC does a VMFCLEAR or otherwise causes the
message to clear before they can read it).

Thank you all for your responses. I was pretty sure LogMsg_File was used
in the context you all mentioned.
We are in the midst or our annual audit and the auditors want us to start
using this feature. I am pretty sure they don't
have a clue as to what it is used for. They saw the words LogMsg and
thought that it should be logging something.
We have it disabled so this caught their eye even more.
The folks on this list are a very clever group and I wanted to be sure
some one had found a new use for LogMsg.
Again thanks.
Steve G.

It certainly does not write anything to a file, so the auditors are going to be disappointed. What a shame! ;-)

I know that to most of the readership this wont be important,
but as it recently ran, it is still in my head....

Every year, from November thru the beginning of January,
a scheduled routine of mine runs every evening at approximately
sunset time, and adds one 'lit' candle to a Hanuka log message.

This is also 20-25 years old, although of course it went through
some minor changes when the log message control
commands changed. I guess that must have been
between VM/SP and VM/ESA.

It also builds the message without using a file.

Actually, MANY years ago (so many I can't recall, but I'm thinking early 1980's)
I wrote an exec that simply reads the contents of a file and 'copies' it to the
system logmsg. It allows you to 'compose' the message easily instead of CP SET
LOGMSG's line by line 'editing', and of course uses EXECIO (initially, PIPE now)
to write the logmsg in mixed case. :)

When LogMsg_File came along, I simply didn't have any need for it. We also have
VM:Secure and we don't use it's LOGMSG features either.
