Currently I'm using the SMTP server shipped with VM for outgoing
email. (The only email we're using is that which is created from the
SENDFILE command with the (SMTP option. We use it to send out alerts
about problems in VM and VSE.)

Because of routing/firewall/DNS issues in the network, I've been
asked if I can use the SMTP server used for our PC-based email
system. Is there a way to tell VM to use an external SMTP server
rather than its own? Will it work with SENDFILE (SMTP?

If you use something like this:

; Send all outbound mail to 'SWITCH' server for MS Exchange.
IPMAILERADDRESS 10.199.3.62

in the SMTP CONFIG, and give SMTP a TCPIP DATA file with NSINTERADDR
commented out, it will forward all outgoing mail to the address given.
That server has to be configured to accept mail from (an optionally
direct mail to) your VM SMTP.
